Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

Between May 13 – 19, we’re commemorating Mental Health Awareness Week 2024.

This year’s theme is ‘Movement – Moving More For Our Mental Health’ and we’re encouraging all staff to do their bit and raise awareness for this important cause.

Details are outlined in the staff intranet. Each day will have a sub-theme, but here are the activities which are running daily:

  • STEP UP SPECTRUM – Starting on Monday 13 May is our step challenge! Two prizes are up for grabs, for the person/team with the most steps total!
  • MINDFULNESS SESSIONS – Each day, Agnes & Zed will be hosting a mindfulness session for colleagues on Teams. If timings do not suit, you can watch a recording on the intranet.
  • MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS CORNER – If you’d like to talk to one of our MHFAs, there will be daily drop-ins where you can call someone for a chat on Teams.

MHAW 2024’s sub-themes are:

Monday 13, DISCOVER – Launch of Dr Linda’s chosen charity of the year, and mental health blogs.

Tuesday 14, MOTIVATE – Motivational messages shared on the intranet.

Wednesday 15, BOND – Fuddle Day, where you can bring in food for a communal buffet.

Thursday 16, MOVE – Navigation Walk –> Appletree Garden & Wear It Green Day.

Friday 17, CONNECT – Lunchtime general knowledge quiz for all staff available.

On the first day of MHAW, we were able to DISCOVER that Spectrum’s chosen charity of the year is the mental health charity, Mind.

Founded in 1946 and originally named the National Association for Mental Health, Mind has worked to improve the lives of people with mental health problems to ensure that everyone experiencing a mental health issue can access the support they need.

This summer’s charity challenge will see Dr Linda undertake a trek across Reeth, North Yorkshire on Saturday 17 August. Our JustGiving page can be found here.

MOTIVATE was the sub-theme for Tuesday.

Colleagues were encouraged to send in their best motivational quotes or words of encouragement for mental health, which were featured on the staff intranet.

Here is a personal favourite, sent in by one member of staff.

The next sub-theme was BOND. We invited Spectrum staff to host fuddles within their sites. For those who don’t know, fuddle is a Yorkshire term for a communal buffet – typically hosted within the workplace. Employees can all bring in a dish each, to share with their colleagues.

Also known as a potluck, a fuddle is a fantastic way for people to get to know each other, give morale a tasty boost, and create bonds over food. Staff were also invited to wear green to work this week – the official colour for mental health awareness.

Thursday saw colleagues MOVE. Our staff from Navigation Walk took part in an afternoon walk to Appletree, along with one of Spectrum’s Non-Executive Directors, Sue. Colleagues at Wakefield Integrated Sexual Health also enjoyed their time at Appletree Garden: “It certainly made us all appreciate the fresh air and peaceful green space. We smelt different herbs, hunted for newts and had a tour by Mat. Weather wasn’t great so we came back to TW and shared a buffet lunch. It was a lovely couple of hours and everyone enjoyed it!”

Finally, MHAW’s last sub-theme of the week was CONNECT. A light-hearted lunchtime quiz full of brainteasers and general knowledge put participants to the test over five rounds, including one entitled How Well Do You Know Spectrum? The winner was Tamzin from Navigation Walk.

Step Up Spectrum: A huge well done to Mel, our step challenge winner with a whopping 136,107 steps over seven days! A clear message was sent to her competitors on the very first day of the challenge, where an impressive 25,203 steps were achieved by Mel. Also, congrats to Administeppers for triumphing in the group category. All participants did a fantastic job in keeping active throughout the week, raising awareness for improving mental health and overall wellbeing.
