At Spectrum Community Health CIC, we believe that the best healthcare is delivered through compassionate leadership, expert collaboration and a shared commitment to improving lives. This was brought to life at HMP Haverigg on 7 July, where an outstanding Health Promotion Day demonstrated the power of working together to improve the health and wellbeing of both patients and staff.
The event welcomed people from across the prison community, alongside a wide range of external health and wellbeing organisations, creating an inspiring environment where prevention, education and personalised care took centre stage. It was a fantastic example of system wide leadership in action, with Spectrum and HMPPS working seamlessly together to deliver meaningful health interventions and promote healthier futures.
The impact of the day was remarkable. Forty-nine Hepatitis C tests were completed, alongside 22 Fibro scans, giving staff access to potentially life changing screening and increasing awareness of blood borne viruses. Patients and colleagues also benefited from advice, support and health checks covering smoking cessation, vaccinations, NHS Health Checks, bowel screening, dental health, recovery services and much more.
The event also showcased the wider role that health promotion plays within secure environments. HMPPS colleagues made an invaluable contribution throughout the planning and delivery of the day, supporting logistics, healthy catering, refreshments, transport and accessibility, ensuring everyone could participate. Gym staff and Gym Orderlies provided blood pressure, height, weight and BMI checks alongside fun physical activities, while Residential Support Assistants offered mobility support and transport for those who needed it.
The success of the day was made possible through the expertise and generosity of a wide range of partners, including Lancashire & South Cumbria Hepatitis C and Community Liver Team, North West Ambulance Service, Morecambe Bay Bowel Screening Team, Waythrough, CADAS, SMART Recovery, Rowlands Pharmacy, Time for Teeth Dental Services, OMI Interactive Sensory and Outspoken. 
Events like this show what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose: delivering compassionate, person-centred care that reaches people where they are and helps reduce health inequalities.
