Primary Care in mental health hospitals

Spectrum provides primary care services within The Bretton Centre and Newton Lodge areas of Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield.

Most patients in Fieldhead Hospital are adults with mental disorders who have been transferred to the hospital for treatment, either from a prison or other secure setting, or by a referral from the community.

About Newton Lodge

Our healthcare team provides the primary care elements of the patients’ healthcare, including:

  • An introduction to our primary care services
  • A brief health check when patients arrive
  • Screening for blood-borne viruses (BBV) and taking a clinical history
  • GP clinics
  • Nurse led clinics and management of long term conditions
  • Public health screening, including vaccinations and cancer screening
  • Specialist substance misuse support
  • Health promotion
  • Liaison with secondary healthcare services as required
  • Support for weight management – this is the only forensic service of its kind to offer the Saxenda weight loss injection, which is usually prescribed in the community

Our team takes a holistic approach to patient care in the hospital and works closely with South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, psychiatry teams and other partners to support the best outcomes for patients.

Spectrum staff also provide training, supporting the induction for new mental health workers and offer educational sessions for psychiatry trainees on topics such as safe prescribing.
