Immigration Removal Centres

Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs) provide secure but humane accommodation for people who are detained in relation to their immigration status.

Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre

Derwentside IRC in County Durham holds women who are waiting for Home Office decisions on their asylum applications, or whose applications have failed and who cannot remain in the UK legally. It is the only single sex centre of its kind in the UK. The women enjoy a relaxed regime, with as much freedom of movement and association as possible.

Spectrum provides a comprehensive primary care service to support the women during their time at the IRC, including mental and physical healthcare. Our service model is nurse led model and also trauma informed, with practitioners who have gender specific training. HM Inspectorate of Prisons reported excellent healthcare and welfare at the centre.

On arrival, nurses aim to triage and assess the women’s healthcare needs within two hours. All arrivals are screened for Diphtheria and offered dry blood-spot testing for Hepatitis and HIV.

Services provided onsite include:

  • Mental health services, counselling, dentistry, optical care and other services to meet the women’s needs.
  • Appointment with a GP within 24 hours if required.
  • Regular health promotion events.
  • Access to 30 minutes of free legal advice.
  • If a patient has complex or urgent needs which cannot be treated in just a few days, Spectrum can apply to the Home Office for an extension of their detention on the grounds of medical human rights.

Spectrum is the lead healthcare provider for IRC, working with partners including Rethink and Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust.
